Five arrested in Italian art smuggling

Saturday, October 8, 2005

Numerous smuggled artifacts were found at an Austrian tour guide’s home. Five Italians were arrested and twenty-eight others are now being investigated. The Austrian, known as “Mozart” in the art trafficking world, received a citation for his involvement.

Police claim that some 600 artifacts, which had been illegally excavated, were found. Most ranged from 8th century BCE to the 5th century CE. Many of the items were gold and silver, along with ceramics. One item, a cup, has been valued at several thousand Euros.

The artifacts were plundered from an archaeological site near Rome by “Mozart” using his tour guide credentials. Italian authorities expect that the plundered artifacts will finally be displayed in Italian museums.

What You Should Know About Trane Heat Pumps

What You Should Know About Trane Heat Pumps

by

Jacob Alston

HVAC isn’t new to Trane. James Trane opened his first business more than 120 years ago in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Many countries around the world have homes equipped with a Trane. Trane heat pumps offer the convenience of heating and air conditioning in a single unit.

Although the name may suggest a unit for heating, the heat pump heats when it’s cold and cools when it’s hot. The need for both a furnace and AC unit is a thing of the past. Efficiency is a key requirement for the environment we live in. Trane offers standard efficiency, high, super and ultra efficiency units. The standard efficiency XB13 and XB14 offer efficient performance, economical operation, durable construction and the optional “Trane CleanEffects”. “CleanEffects” removes more irritants with an advanced filtration system. Most of the XB14 models qualify for tax credits. There a few differences and many similarities with these two units. An HSPF rating of up to 8.5 and a nominal sound level of 78 come with both. HSPF is the heating efficiency rating. The coil and functional parts come with a 5 year warranty. The compressor’s of both units offer a ten year warranty. The XB14 model has a cooling efficiency – SEER – rating of up to 15.00 and exceeds the minimum federal Energy Star regulations. The XB13 unit has a SEER rating of over 13.00 but does not have the Energy Star rating. Optional extended warranties are available for both. Trane’s high efficiency models are the XR13, XR14 and XR15. All three offer a limited registered warranty of ten years for the compressor, coil and functional parts. Extended warranties are also available for each. Nominal sound levels of 76 are found with the XR13 and XR14, with a slightly quieter level of 75 offered with the XR15. Only the XR15 has an Energy Star rating. Model 15 offers a heating efficiency of up to 9.0 and a cooling efficiency of up to 16.50. The HSPF for the 14 is up to 9.0, and an – up to 15.00 – SEER rating. The XR13 has a slightly weaker HSPF of up to 8.5 and an SEER of over 14.00. Both of the super efficiency heat pumps available from Trane are Energy Star rated. They have an impressive 12 year warranty on the compressor and a 10 year coil and functional parts warranty. Both have an HSPF of up to 9.0. The 14i offers a cooling efficiency of up to 15.25. The XL15i has an – up to – 16.00 SEER rating. A nominal sound level of 74 is found with both units. Ultra efficient – Energy Star rated – heat pumps are the most efficient units offered by Trane. The HSPF for the XL16i and the XL20i are – up to – 9.2 and 9.0 respectively. The 16i has a cooling efficiency of up to 17.0. The 20i has a cooling efficiency of up to 19.00. A peaceful level of 74 is the reading when testing for the measured sound emitted while these units are running. There are two compressors operating inside the XL20i. This dual-staged operation is part of the technology that makes this heat pump an “ultra” model. The XL16i uses a staged – single compressor operation. All mechanical parts – the coils and the specialized compressors – come with extendable warranties. The limited warranty can be registered for 12 years for the compressors and ten for the parts and coils. Whether you’re looking for efficient comfort in a single unit, or an ultra efficient heating and air conditioning unit, Trane offers many options. Saving space and cash over the short term and long term are reasons to consider Trane heat pumps. Impressive world-wide service and a long history of quality make for reliability you need when looking to heat and cool your home.

Accounting Sucks

By Frank Hague

Want to become an Accountant? Yuck!

My reason to become an accountant was that I saw it as a way to get free education while getting paid.

When I got my undergraduate degree I figured that I could rest on my laurels and the world would beat a path to my door offering me fantastic jobs.

In actual fact the only job offers I got was as an insurance salesman on commission, as a salesman selling paper towels and as an articling student for one of the big eight accounting firms.

I snapped up the articling job.

What a grandiose mistake!

Fot the next 4 years I worked during the day, I worked overtime during tax preparation time, I went to school at night and studied every night for 4 years and went one month a year to summerschool.

During this one month you crammed in two more full accounting-related courses and wrote exams.

So over a period of 4 years you take 17 courses and then write something called the Uniform Final Examinations.Failure Rate over 50%.

So you pass. What now? At the time I was working as an auditor for the government. My work was extremely boring because the government was in the process of setting up a new state tax system taxing the actual value of companies.

However, I had my own personalized briefcase, a copy of the tax act , and a namestamp.

The job was sooo boring:

-You started at 9.30 AM and then counted the minutes to 10.30 AM which was coffee time. Coffee time took 20 minutes and woo anybody who took more than 20 minutes.

And then after Coffee you counted the minutes till lunch.

Because it was a government job you could calculate when and how much your next raise was going to be.

You could also calculate how much your pension was going to be. So most of our time was spent calculating how much we would be making

5 years from now and how much our pensions would be.

I quit after exactly one year because of the boredom.

The Director was so peed off because of my disloyalty in quitting him that after I told him he immediately barged into my cubicle and demanded I handed over my personalized briefcase and my signature stamp as well as the tax act.

I bought a small existing practice from a Jewish accountant who had become a millionaire selling land as a hobby and did not need his accounting practice any more.

So here I was,in my own practice, the token gentile surrounded by Jewish accountants having almost nothing but Jewish clients.

Well, I learned accounting in a hurry!

I never learned real accounting going to school, just theories, laws and statistical methods.

However, when somebody brings in a greasy paper bag with receipts and says:” can you do my returns for the last 4 years?

I am missing about 8 months worth of receipts.” you learn accounting in a hurry.

Another client(a Cropduster) comes in and says: “I just split up with my wife and she is going to tell the tax department that I have not filed a return for the last 7 years. Can you do them before next Tuesday? I have no receipts.”

Anyway, counting other people’s money gets discouraging after a while.

I quit accounting and started pursuing other interests.

On the whole accounting for me has been a waste of time.

Mars orbiter finds widespread evidence of water-bearing minerals

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has found evidence of hydrated silica or opal, a form of mineral, over large areas in the Martian surface, including in the large martian canyon called Valles Marineris. The discovery was made by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer (CRISM) instrument on the orbiter. The findings are published by Ralph Milliken of Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other scientists in the November issue of the journal Geology.

Opaline minerals were first found recently on Mars by Spirit rover in the Gusev crater. The present find points to more widespread occurrence of the minerals in comparatively younger strata of Mars. The find indicates that liquid water might have been present on the surface of Mars for a longer time than previously thought. The previous view was that liquid water disappeared from the Martian surface three billion years ago. Now it is estimated that water could have been present as late as two billion years ago.

The presence of opal not only indicates water, but also that it was there long enough to alter some of the rocks. CRISM, which detected the mineral measures visible and infrared reflection spectra in 544 channels and has 20 times better resolution than previously deployed instruments.

This is an exciting discovery because it extends the time range for liquid water on Mars, and the places where it might have supported life.

Hydrated minerals such as opal that indicate presence of water is yet another evidence of presence of liquid water on Mars. Opal found on Earth’s surface usually contain 3 – 10% water, but can be as high as 20%. Other water-bearing minerals found earlier are phyllosilicates and hydrated sulfates. Presence of liquid water is also suggested by suspected water-sculpted land forms on Mars, such as gullies and river channels. Currently water is present only as ice at both polar caps of Mars.

A number of outcrops of opaline minerals are found as thin layers over large distances, rimming the Valles Marineris canyon. It is expected that Martian explorations for past or present life will have to focus on similar younger terrains with hydrated minerals.

“This is an exciting discovery because it extends the time range for liquid water on Mars, and the places where it might have supported life,” said Scott Murchie, from Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, one of the co-authors.

Seven bushfires near Perth, Western Australia

Sunday, February 4, 2007

Fourteen houses have been destroyed and another 3 damaged by a bush fire burning in Jarrah forests and farmland near the historical timber town of Dwellingup 70km south east of Perth, Western Australia.

The fire has also destroyed approximately 100 power poles, leading to a loss of telecommunication services to the town and affecting water supplies. Mobile generators have been installed for emergency power.

Steve Slavin, spokesman for Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), said that 250 fire-fighters are containing the fire with crews concentrating on the southern front, which is now within 3 km of the town.

Mr Slavin said “Our concern is that winds this afternoon will be swinging around to the south and increasing in intensity.” “It’s making us nervous. The advice we’re giving to people in Dwellingup is if they’ve decided that they will leave, this would be a good time to do it”

In separate fires near North Yunderup, Greenfields and Parkland have affected transmission lines supplying power to approximately 56,000 properties.

Additional fires are burning near Toodyay 85km north east of Perth, Another fire is burning near Williams approximately 160 south east of Perth and 90Km east of Dwellingup. And in the southern rural suburb of Forrestdale. These fires are reported to be under control.

Western Australian Police Arson squad are investigating these fires as some appear to be deliberately lit. The Police are also investigating the death of a women in her mid 20’s who died on Saturday after her car rolled while fleeing the fire near Toodyay.

CopiapĂł, Chile mining accident: in depth

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

The rescue of the Chilean miners trapped in the San José Mine in Copiapó, codenamed Operación San Lorenzo (San Lorenzo Operation), began on Tuesday night, at around 20:00 local time (23:00 UTC).

Florencio Ávalos was the first miner to be rescued, at 00:12 local time (03:12 UTC) on Wednesday. He was wearing a shirt signed by all his fellow miners. “The first miner is already with us. We saw it all, him hugging his wife Monica and his son Byron,” said President Piñera shortly after the first rescue. “We still have a long journey.”

“This will be recorded on every single Chilean heart forever,” Piñera added. “I hope the miners’ hope stay with us, just like the [February] earthquake victims’ [hope] and what the earthquake took off. We know that the disasters unite us all.”

All the 33 miners were rescued. The last miner, Luis UrzĂșa, was rescued at 21:55 Chile time (00:55 UTC). “It is a pleasure to be Chilean, [I’m] proud,” said Luis UrzĂșa to President Piñera. “In honour of the miners, their families, the rescuers […] let’s sing our national anthem. Viva Chile Mierda!,” said Piñera. UrzĂșa thanked Mining Minister Golborne and the First Lady Cecilia Morel for “fighting for their lives.” “I’m proud of my fellow miners,” UrzĂșa added.

Six rescuers, including a miner and a paramedic, descended to the miners’ shelter using the FĂ©nix 3 capsule which was specially constructed for the rescue. They performed check-ups and talk with the miners before taking them back to the surface. The rescuers still don’t leave the mine.

The Fénix 3 capsules are 3.95 metres in height and weigh about 460 kilograms. They have an armour, an oxygen tube and a microphone. The occupants helmets contain an intercom to keep them in contact with the rescue team on the surface.

President of Chile Piñera assisted to the rescue. Bolivian President Evo Morales could not attend Carlos Mamani’s rescue. Mamani is the only Bolivian miner in the group.

A mass for the miners was conducted at 18:00 local time (21:00 UTC). The rescue takes between 15 and 20 minutes for each miner.

On Tuesday, Mayor of CopiapĂł Maglio Cicardini announced that the municipal schools in the city will have no classes this Wednesday “to transform the rescue of the Atacama’s 33 in a familiar meeting,” Radio Cooperativa reported.

“The miners will be taken to the CopiapĂł Regional Hospital for medical checkup, where they will have to stay for 48 hours,” Health Minister Mañalich said to TelevisiĂłn Nacional de Chile.

Celebrations are taking place in several Chilean cities. In Santiago de Chile, people gathered in one of the most important points of the city, Plaza Italia. In Pichilemu, tens of cars are passing over its most important streets. In CopiapĂł, people gathered in its main square to assist a massive concert.

On August 5, 33 miners were trapped more than 700 meters (2,300 ft) underground, in the San JosĂ© copper–gold mine, located about 40 kilometers north of CopiapĂł, Chile.

The youngest trapped miner is 19 years old, and the oldest is 63. There were several rescue attempts before reaching the miners’ shelter on August 22. The National Emergencies Office of Chile (ONEMI) released a list of the trapped miners on August 6, which included Franklin Lobos RamĂrez, a retired footballer.

Chile is the worlds top producer of copper, according to The Economist. The San JosĂ© Mine is owned by the San Esteban Mining Company (Empresa Minera San Esteban). The mine was closed down in 2007, after relatives of a miner who had died sued the company executives, but the mine was re–opened in 2008.

It was originally estimated that “it would take three to four months to complete the rescue of the trapped miners”. There were three plans to reach the miners: “Plan A” using a Strata 950 drill, “Plan B” using a Schramm T130XD drill, and “Plan C” using a RIG-422 drill. The first to reach the miners was “Plan B”, early on Saturday 9.

The last step of their rescue, announced by Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, was originally due to begin on Tuesday. Laurence Golborne, Minery Minister said “If it is possible, and the cement sets before and we don’t have any impediments to doing it, it would be wonderful,” in a press conference on Monday. The men will be extracted in a steel rescue capsule 54 cm (21 inches) in diameter.

On September 4, Chilean filmmaker Rodrigo OrtĂșzar announced plans to film a movie about the accident, called “Los 33” (“The 33”). The film will be released in 2011.

One miner is Bolivian, and the other 32 are Chilean.

RaĂșl Bustos, 40 years old, is an hydraulics engineer. He left his job in Talcahuano after the February 27 earthquake to work in the mine.

Daniel Herrera, 27 years old, is a lorry driver. He has acted as paramedic assistant in the mine. He said to La Tercera “the miners were unhappy with the psychologist in the rescue team.”

Claudio Acuña, miner, is fan of the Colo-Colo football club. The BBC reports he is aged 56, but El Comercio says he is 44.

Pedro Cortez is aged 24. He joined the mine with his friend Carlos Bugueño. Cortez is an electrician, and lost a finger in the mine a year ago.

Víctor Zamora is a 33 years old auto mechanic. Zamora is married to Jéssica Cortez, who confirmed she was pregnant while he was in the mine.

Osman Araya is 30 years old, and married. He began working as miner four months before the accident.

Florencio Ávalos is 31 years old. He is the brother of Renån Ávalos, who is also trapped in the mine. He worked as driver in San José. Ávalos filmed videos, sent later to his relatives.

Ávalos was the first miner to be rescued, on Wednesday at 00:10 local time (03:10 UTC).

Jorge Galleguillos, 56 years old, has worked all his life in the mine. He said in one video he was feeling unwell; he takes medication for hypertension.

Carlos Barrios is a 27 years old miner. His father, Antenor Barrios, told Agence France-Presse: “I find he’s very strong and has enthusiasm. He spoke loud and clear. I was excited.”

Franklin Lobos RamĂrez is a 53 years old retired footballer. He played for Cobresal, Deportes Antofagasta, Club de Deportes Santiago Wanderers and UniĂłn La Calera, and briefly for the Chile national football team. Lobos had worked as a truck driver in the mine.

Yonni Barrios, called “The Doctor”, is a 50 years old electrician. He has knowledge of first aid, and was given responsibility for monitoring the health of his colleagues. “I felt I was in hell,” Barrios said in a letter to his wife.

Carlos Bugueño, 27 years old, joined the mine with Pedro Cortez. Previously, he worked as a watchman.

Alex Vega Salazar is a 31 years old heavy machinery mechanic. He is married to Jessica Salgado, and celebrated his birthday in the mine on September 22.

José Ojeda, 46 years old, is the master driller. Ojeda is widowed and diabetic.

Luis UrzĂșa is a 54 year old topographer. He is the shift-leader, and was the first miner to talk with authorities. He is known as Don Lucho among the miners. He draw plans of the area of the mine where they are trapped.

UrzĂșa will be the last miner to leave the mine.

José Henríquez is a 54 years old drill master. He is also an evangelical preacher, and has worked in mines for 33 years.

VĂctor Segovia is a 48 years old electrician. He is in charge of writing down everything that happens in the mine.

Pablo Rojas is a 45 years old explosives loader. Married, he had been working less than six months in the mine.

Juan Illanes is a 51 year old miner. He was a sergeant in the Beagle border conflict between Chile and Argentina in 1978, the incident which almost provoked a war between the countries.

Illanes was rescued on Wednesday, at 02:07 local time (05:07 UTC).

Jimmy SĂĄnchez, 19, is the youngest miner. He had been working in the mine for five months before the accident. His role is to check the temperature and humidity in the mine.

Samuel Ávalos is a 43 years miner. His wife Ruth said “he was addicted to the cocaine.” His role in the rescue is to check air quality in the area the miners are living. According to the BBC, “Ávalos has worked in the mine for five months.”

Mario GĂłmez, aged 63, is the oldest of the miners. He has worked 51 years as miner. His father was also a miner, and is nicknamed “El Navegao” (“The Sailed One”). He was thinking of retiring in November.

GĂłmez also wrote the message “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33” (“We are fine in the shelter the 33 [of us]”).

Segovia is 48 years old. He is married to Jessica Chille, who said “To hear his voice was a confort to my heart,” after talking with him for the first time in 24 days. His sister MarĂa, was nicknamed “La Alcaldesa” (“The Mayoress”) for her leading role at Campamento Esperanza. His father, DarĂo Senior, was trapped in a mine for a week, and suffered serious injuries after two other mining accidents, according to the BBC.

Carlos Mamani is a 23 years old heavy equipment operator. He is also the only non-Chilean miner; Mamani is Bolivian. He began working in the mine just five days before the accident.

Bulgarian Property Investment The Facts

Submitted by: K Damian Qualter BA MBA

Benefits and Cons on Bulgarian Property Investment

With residential property in the UK having reached a peak for the current future, investors have been desperately looking around for alternative locations with investment potential, and Bulgaria is tops on everyone s list. Many investors have already noticed that Bulgaria offers very good value for any money that is spent and it also has letting potential as a holiday destination.

The best investment opportunities in Bulgaria right now include the ski resort of Bansko and the Black Sea resorts of Varna and Bourgas. The capital Sofia is developing rapidly as a commercial Mecca as well, signalling that capital appreciation and rental yields should be very strong in the foreseeable future. Bulgaria saw property price increases of 35% in 2004 however the average yields on rental properties are still 8% to 12% thanks to the fact that most investors are buying in the Black Sea coastal resorts and 15% in ski areas. Some of them are investing in new developments instead.

For example, studio apartments in the Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach can cost the investor as little as 16,850. There are good opportunities out there for both city-centre buy-to-let properties and vacation homes that are also offering letting potential. Let it be known though, that despite promising returns, investors have to be wise to the risks that are potentially involved in buying in an emerging economy like this one.

Low prices attract the buyers who are looking for a quick-fix solution to pension problems, but as many agents as you can find will admit there is no guaranteed resale market in Bulgaria (or anywhere else for that matter) and little existing benchmark for measuring price increases other than more and more investors paying higher prices on a monthly basis. That is why long-term investment is recommended over instant returns.

There is, however a genuine demand for quality rental properties but written contracts with holiday companies are absolutely needed as a means of ensuring the buyer a guaranteed yield. Travel agents and tour agents who are no longer enjoying big mark-ups in Spain are looking for higher profit margins in Bulgaria and this does cause problems in the long-term future. High street travel agents and tour operators do have an amazing number of sun and ski holidays available in Bulgaria today and they are selling well, which goes well for future returns for quality locations and developments.

If you are really wondering what the benefits are to investing in Bulgarian Property; it is definitely the cost. The cons of course is that nothing in property investment is completely fail safe and therefore you need a regent in Bulgaria to act on your behalf and help you find a piece of property that will do exactly what you need it to.

Iraqi insurgency continues unabated, new hopes for a cabinet

Monday, April 25, 2005

Two car-rigged explosions in Baghdad killed 15 and injured nearly 40 people beside a Shiite Ahl al-Bait mosque Sunday. In Tikrit, 140km northeast of Baghdad, 6 were killed and nearly 26 injured in two suicide bombings. A car bomber drove into police assembled in an academy compound and detonated, then a second car bomber attacked a nearby army liaison office 20 minutes later.

In the Baghdad attack, the bombings took place in the western al-Shoulah district in front of an ice cream shop near the mosque. The first blast was followed within minutes by the second blast after witnesses to the first bomb rushed in to help survivors.

The anti-coalition insurgencies Sunday inflicted its heaviest toll since the national elections held January 30.

The violence, aimed mostly at Iraqi security forces and Shiite strongholds, is partly blamed on the struggling National Assembly’s efforts to gain a consensus in forming a new government. The lack of leadership has led to appointments of police and security officials with no consent from the Interior Ministry, and is against the requirement of the law. The lack of authority diminishes Iraqi efforts to put down and pursue rebel forces.

Ahmed Chalabi, now-exiled, but a one time a seeker the Iraqi Prime Minister position himself and also a provider of US intelligence on weapons programs, said “We need a government immediately. The delay in forming a government has encouraged the terrorists.”

By late Sunday, reports indicate Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Ibrahim al-Jaafari was ready to name a cabinet as early as today or Tuesday, but such hopes have gone unfulfilled in the past. Efforts to include candidates in contentious top cabinet posts with Sunni parliamentarians led by the former PM Iyad Allawi may be abandoned to speed filling the positions.

The dominant Shiite United Iraqi Alliance took 146 of the 275 seats in parliament, while the main Kurdish bloc took 77. To many, exclusion of the Sunni representatives in posts such as defense or interior minister, or either oil and finance minister, is untenable when they control 40 parliamentary seats.
