Sales of Jackson songs and memorabilia rise after his death

Saturday, June 27, 2009

The death of Michael Jackson on Thursday has caused retail demand for his songs and for memorabilia to increase.

Yesterday, the top nine selling items at Apple’s iTunes Store were albums by Jackson, with first and second being a “hits” album and the 1982 album Thriller.

Amazon.com similarly reported selling more Jackson merchandise in the 24 hours following his death than it had sold in the preceding 11 years, and that sales of Jackson CDs accounted for 60% of its total business on Thursday. Yesterday morning the top seller in the album chart for Amazon’s U.K. division was Off the Wall, followed by Bad and Thriller in second and third places, respectively.

Many stores, including Graywhale CD Exchange in Salt Lake City, several record stores in Danville, Virginia, and many retailers in New Zealand, have all reported selling out of Jackson’s CDs and DVDs. The flagship store of Tower Records Japan, in Shinjuku, sold out of several of Jackson’s DVDs and ran low on several other items including CDs. The Danville Register Bee recommended to its readers that if they had record players they should investigate antique and charity shops, after one antique shop reported discovering three Jackson Five vinyl albums in its basement.

The effect of the increase in sales had an effect on stock prices. Midday yesterday, Apple shares rose around 2%, Amazon shares rose around 1.3%, and eBay shares rose by 0.64%. Stock market analysts predict that this will be a short-term effect, however. Scott Fullman, an investment strategist at WJB Capital Group in New York, stated “This is going to be one of these events that will have an immediate impact and then wane out in a week or two.”.

In Las Vegas, 21 items of Jackson memorabilia, including handwritten lyrics for Jackson’s song “Bad” and the shirt that Jackson wore on his Victory Tour in 1984, sold at auction yesterday at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino for a total of USD$205,000, with the shirt, at USD$52,500 the most expensive individual item.

eBay has reported an increase in individuals auctioning Jackson memorabilia. These range from records to a Fedora hat signed by Jackson.

Also for sale on eBay and elsewhere are tickets to the This Is It concerts, at the O2 arena, where Jackson had been scheduled to perform. Ticket sellers such as Ticketmaster, Seatwave, and AEG Live have announced that they will be refunding concert tickets. But under standard contract law such refunds only apply to the original purchasor of the ticket, who dealt with the ticket companies directly. Anyone buying a ticket on eBay only has recourse against the seller on eBay that they bought from, and even then only if it was explicitly stated in the terms and conditions of the particular eBay sale that a refund was available.

At the 2009 Glastonbury Festival, stalls have been selling commemorative T-shirts to Festival attendees, with various different slogans including “Michael Jackson R.I.P 1958–2009” and “I was at Glasto 09 when Jacko died”. T-shirt vendors also appeared outside of the UCLA Medical Center where paramedics took Jackson, proferring for USD$10 T-shirts with the slogan “in loving memory of Michael Jackson” and a silhouette of Jackson, although they had few takers.

In Union Square in New York, one street artist was selling hand-made buttons that have pictures of Jackson’s album covers on them. In Times Square, another T-shirt vendor was selling T-shirts printed with copies of the front page of USA Today that reported Jackson’s death.

One observer, Allison Southwick (a Better Business Bureau spokeswoman), commented “I’m honestly expecting to see a Web site pop up by the end of the day selling Michael Jackson commemorative plates.” Whilst such commemorative plates have yet to appear, collectors have been offering commemorative stamps of Jackson for sale on eBay and elsewhere. Several commemorative stamps of Jackson already exist. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines issued $5, $2, $1, and 60¢ Michael Jackson stamps in 1985, as part of its Leaders Of The World series. Tanzania issued a 350s stamp, part of a Famous Black Entertainers set, in 1990. Guinea issued a 500f stamp in 1991. St Vincent issued another $2 Jackson stamp in 1991, as part of Famous Entertainers series. And Grenada issued a 60¢ Jackson stamp, part of its Gold Record Winners series in 1992.

Gore Vidal once remarked of the death of rival Truman Capote that it was a “good career move”. The death of an artist does serve to increase the popularity of their works. People have speculated whether this will be a temporary or a permanent thing for Jackson.

Jim Lentz, who is the Chief Operating Officer of American Royal Arts (a memorabilia dealership in Boca Raton), asked “Is he Elvis or Marilyn Monroe, or is he Mike Tyson?”.

Elvis Presley died at 42, officially of heart failure. Stores sold out of his records and souveniers within hours of the news of his death. In the 20 years following his death, RCA Records sold approximately 400 million of his recordings.

In the days and weeks immediately following Presley’s death, RCA had to sub-contract pressing to other companies, as it was unable by itself to keep up with demand. Sony Corporation announced yesterday that it had received “unprecedented” levels of orders for CDs of Jackson’s music, and was considering boosting production. It had received 150,000 orders for CDs at its music unit in Tokyo. “The amount is unprecedented for one day and we think we need to consider increasing the production of CDs that we plan to sell from July.” said a spokesman for the company. Amazon has been informing customers buying Jackson CDs that they might have to wait between 1 and 3 weeks for their orders to be shipped.

University’s lion mascot out like a lamb after DUI

Friday, December 5, 2008

Another member of the Pennsylvania State University‘s cheerleading squad will step in to play the Nittany Lion at the 2009 Rose Bowl, after the main performer was suspended after being charged with DUI and summary traffic violations late last month. Penn State is the largest university in Pennsylvania and among the ten largest public universities in the United States.

Pennsylvanian James Sheep was charged with driving under the influence on November 22. Cheerleading coach Curt White told the Associated Press that Sheep will return later in 2009. The duration of the suspension was not mentioned.

Sheep was pulled over on campus at 3:16 am November 22, before Penn’s game versus Michigan State. He registered a .164 blood alcohol level. Penn State won the game 49-18.

Sheep has avoided interview requests by The Daily Collegian, Penn State’s newspaper, on multiple occasions.

In a statement, White commented: “James has been a very enthusiastic and hard-working Nittany Lion, but we are disappointed that his recent actions did not represent the high standards of this position. We are planning to have James resume his duties in the new year and are confident that he will represent Penn State Athletics and the University with a high level of energy, dedication and respect.”

The Pennsylvania State University website lists Sheep on their website as the Lion from 2007-2008, conflicting with coach White’s comment that he would return in the new year.

The mascot was introduced in 1907, brought in as a costume character in 1921, and is even the subject of the book The Nittany Lion: An Illustrated Tale. While most American university mascots change in appearance over the decades, the Nittany Lion remains essentially the same design as it has for generations.

Some earlier reports suggested that “46 current or former Penn State [football] players have been charged with crimes on 163 counts in the past six seasons.” Of those players charged, 27 were found guilty of at least one charge.

Liposuction: It’s For More Than Just Your Stomach Fat!}

Submitted by: Beth Ortiz

Let’s face it, we all have a couple of pounds that we’d like to lose. As a person gets older, their metabolism slows down, and we put on pounds as a result. Remember, it gets even harder to keep the weight off if all you do is sit behind a desk and only move to go get lunch!

Many people admit that they’re not really the kind to go exercise the weight off, so they just jump right on ahead to the liposuction procedure. You’ve probably heard a lot about liposuction in the media when reading about celebrities who’s had it, and who should get it. Well, those are actually two categories that can apply to one or the other of the human population.

Fat tends to collect in certain areas of the body when people eat lots of food that contains (gasp!) things like saturated fats. The body cannot process these kinds of fats, so the fat simply moves to certain areas of the body. That’s what causes things like that dreaded cellulite.

Liposuction uses small metal tubes, inserted into the fat layer that has formed under the skin, and in conjunction with a suction pump, literally sucks out the fat. The result is a figure that is instantly sleeker. In fact, for people who are especially large, pounds and pounds can be sucked out during just one procedure!

However, while the tummy is probably the most popular area for liposuction, there are lots of other areas in which this procedure can be done. For example, the second most popular area would be the thighs, because who wouldn’t want to be able to have nice cellulite-free thighs?

What other areas can benefit from this kind of procedure? The ankles and legs, the back (generally this is just for women), the buttocks, and for men the flank and the breasts. Basically, wherever fat collects, it can probably be sucked out.

The thing to remember about this procedure is that there are and unfortunate amount of surgeons who treat this procedure more recklessly than they should. They feel that they should suck out as much fat as possible and as quickly as possible. Although it was previously mentioned that pounds of fat might be removed during just one procedure, it’s important to note that that’s only for extreme cases. Otherwise, it’s too dangerous to take out too much fat at once.

Also, something else that you need to protect yourself against is falling for an advertisement. Some surgeons who have lots of money will commission lots of different advertisements promising to be the absolute best at what they do. They show lots of pictures in these advertisements as well, but make sure that you exercise caution and acknowledge the fact that the photos could have been altered.

So, before you decide to have surgery, save yourself some money by first cutting back on your fat intake. You can slowly start getting fit by doing something as simple as taking a ten-minute walk each day. Choose this surgical procedure carefully.

Maker Faire 2009 wraps up in San Mateo, California

Thursday, June 4, 2009

The fourth annual Maker Faire took place this past weekend at the San Mateo Fairground in San Mateo, California located in the United States. The first Maker Faire, which took place in 2006, had approximately 20,000 people in attendance. This year, more than 80,000 people were expected to attend; quadruple the attendance of just four years prior. On Saturday night, it was reported that attendance was up considerably over last year’s event.

Maker Faire, the self-declared “World’s Largest DIY Festival”, offers a forum where hundreds of makers and crafters alike man booths where they display their work. In the main halls alone, there were hundreds of booths. Outside the expo halls, the surrounding area was also filled with many interesting projects, some of which were mobile. In addition to all of the projects on display, there were a number of on-stage presentations. The biggest presentation of the weekend was given by Adam Savage who spoke on the topic of his “Colossal Failures”. During his talk, the Fiesta Hall was filled to capacity.

The theme for this year’s fair was “Remake: America” after President Obama‘s call to “begin again the work of remaking America”. In addition, “going green”, alternative fuel vehicles, crafting, steampunk and sciences for the young, were common themes found throughout the fair.

The Advantages Of Using Heating Oil From A Fuel Oil Company In Quincy, Ma

byAlma Abell

Homeowners have a few options available to them when it comes to how they are going to heat their homes. While none of the options are inexpensive, there is one that tends to cost a lot less than the others. This option is oil heat, and it provides more heat than other heating options. Many homeowners like to use heating oil because it doesn’t damage the environment in the way that natural gas can, as there are no methane emissions from heating oil. According to the US Energy Information Administration, oil heat is the least expensive, and heats homes faster than gas or electric heating systems.

In addition to being cheaper, there are many other advantages to using heating oil from a fuel oil company in Quincy, MA. For instance, this oil is clean burning, and there are new types that are even cleaner, using renewable biofuel and extremely low sulfur heating oil. The latter of the two burns with much lower emissions than gas. Unlike gas, heating oil is not explosive, and there is no danger of health issues due to fumes. There is no smoke or soot, and no worries about carbon monoxide poisoning when heating oil is used instead of natural gas.

Homeowners who use heating oil find that they are more comfortable during the colder winter months, because heating oil burns hotter than natural gas, and provides more heat than electric heating systems. It is much easier to maintain a comfortable temperature with heating oil than with other heating systems, and oil-heated homes heat up more quickly.

One of the best things about using heating oil from a fuel oil company in Quincy MA is that customers can easily understand the billing. When it comes to electric heat, many homeowners have no idea about how billing works, because they don’t understand how to read their meters. With gas heat, there are various costs which are added into the bill on top of the cost of the fuel. With oil, the billing is simple. Customers are charged for the amount of oil that they have delivered, and nothing more.

Thai civil rights lawyer Somchai Neelapaichit presumed dead

Friday, January 13, 2006

Prominent Thai civil rights lawyer, Somchai Neelapaichit, is now presumed dead, according to an admission by the country’s Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.

Somchai rose to prominence as a lawyer defending Muslim people accused of involvement in the troubles in the predominantly Muslim provinces of southern Thailand. According to the information provided by the PM, evidence has been provided to the Department of Special Investigations that leads them to believe the lawyer is now dead. This is not considered news by the journalist’s family, according to his wife the country’s Prime Minister admitted to her last year that her husband was dead, and gave assurances that action would be taken against those responsible.

Thailand’s DSI became involved with the disappearance of Somchai in July 2005 when allegations were made that police were involved with the lawyer vanishing. His involvement in cases related to the southern insurgency was suspected to have been behind his disappearance. Somchai had lodged appeals with the Bangkok Criminal Court on behalf of five suspects accused of being involved in a raid on a Narathiwat armoury where weapons were seized and soldiers killed, alleging that they had not been given fair treatment during their prosecution.

The admission follows on from the conviction of Police Major, Nguen Thongsuk, who was prosecuted for illegally detaining the lawyer in 2004. Following that he was last seen in public in March 2004. In the case against the police four other officers were acquitted.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.
